Eid el Kabir

An  Eid el Kabir celebrations

As the Nigerian Government had declared October 15 and 16 as public holidays for the Eid el Kabir festivities, PPA continued the sportsfest.  Tennis and Badminton games were held at Dantata & Sawoe courts.

The games wrapped up at around 12:00 noon.

PART I
...Badminton: Doods of the Orange team vs Tirso's (intricate dance steps) of the Black team...
....outside the Badminton court:  Bookers? Busy  getting bets? NAH...just checking mails and messages: Noel, Donald, Maris, Tickboy, Vernie, John, Allan, TJ....

PART II
Eid el Kabir Luncheon hosted by the Nigerian-Turkish Nile University

The sheer number of cows as sacrificial offerings almost overwhelmed us. As the Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. Huseyin Serp  explained, this ritual is repeated every year during these celebrations. Thousands of cows, goats and rams are slaughtered and given out to hundreds of families regardless of faith and creed.

Lunch was simple but rich – rice was cooked with olive oil, meat almost tasting like corned beef, and the dessert – (I asked for more!) and the very delightful Turkish tea.

We were grateful to the hosts: Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Huseyin Serp and the Dean of Post Graduate Studies Dr. Veyis Karakoc - enjoying once more the hospitality of the Turkish community (via the university).

And from the University we proceeded to the official residence of the Philippine ambassador at Jabi – a charming house in a peaceful neighborhood. The paintings on his wall were done by a Filipino artists.

Isang Araw ng Linggo sa buhay ng mga Manggagawa sa Abuja, Nigeria

A Very Busy Sunday

SPORTSFEST which has become an annual event since its ABL initiation held this year’s opening ceremony last Sunday  the 6th of October 2013.

And much to the delight of the OFWS, this was held at the Nigerian Turkish Nile University as kindly offered to the Philippine Ambassador Alex V. Lamadrid by Dr. Karakoc, the Dean of the University. Such was the hospitality that it encompassed the use of the sporting facilities until the end of the sportsfest.

As the OFWS turned away from the tarred highway and entered the rough road as sketched, upon reaching their destination were taken aback as they laid eyes on the sprawling landscape of the University. Very impressive. Notable is the huge chessboard populated by huge royals and subjects.
Understandably, the impressionable OFWS posed and took pictures of this new environs.

The OFWS comprising the four teams assembled early. The usual line up of events ensued: Parade of the competing teams – A White, B Orange, C Black, D Violet – with their friendly rowdy banters. Followed by the singing of the Nigerian and the Philippine Anthems. The opening prayers were led by Mr. Jabar Guro for the Muslims and Mr. Ruste for the non-Muslims. Incidentally, both were from the Violet team.

The Philippine Ambassador addressed the assembly and introduced the benefactor Dean Karakoc. The Oath of Sportsmanship was led by PPA 2013-2014 Treasurer TJ Barilla.

The Vice-President of PPA Mr. Bernard Mercado officially declared the games open.

Part II  The ultra-modern Nigerian Turkish Nizamiye Hospital

After the games, some members of The Filipino Migrants decided to join Dean Karakoc to visit their state-of-the-art hospital nearby. The imposing building is overlooking the nearby town looked more like a luxurious hotel than what it really is.  Dr. Mustafa Ahsen graciously toured us while explaining the facilities located therein. The building was constructed by their own people. Materials, equipment and furniture were all imported from their country.
We were so engrossed and intent on listening to Dr. Ahsen that only very few photos were taken. We went to the different sections of the hospital - including their blood bank, and theater. There's a restaurant (sort of) at the rooftop.  Maybe one day we'll all climb to the top and see Abuja from that spot while sipping Turkish coffee.

Part III  Sherwin's House Blessing
From the hospital, we proceeded to Sherwin's house.  He has moved to a bigger house for the coming of his wife and daughter. Ninang Otie read the house blessing prayers as Ninong Nonits sprinkled holy water around the house.

Isang Araw ng Linggo sa Buhay ng mga OFWS sa Abuja

ISANG ARAW NG LINGGO SA BUHAY NG MGA OFWS SA ABUJA –
A Send-off Party – for a Special Guy
Joseph Florendo (aka Mang Kepweng, Bishop)

The guy who brought color and joy to this group of OFWs left NIGERIA to work for the same company at home – lucky him- working and being with the family! Pure bliss…
He’s that kind of friend that’ll always put laughter spread on our faces just remembering him. Not just laughter, but GUFFAW!
He’s THAT kind of person, who humbles himself, goes out of his way to help a friend or anybody who’s in distress – in short he’s a friend in the deepest meaning of a friend. That’s Joy….and he's also a practicing Pranic Healer (many beneficiaries already Pinoys and foreigners!)
A send-off was tendered for him last September 15, 2013. For the time he lavished on us – THANK YOU.
And why did it take almost a month to write this?....(cuz he may be back soon…then this write-up would be welcome back as well…)

THANK YOU ...(sa lahat ng mga sponsors...)
